A Breath of Sun

Monday, February 8th

Seward Park brings fond memories from my childhood and is somewhere we like to go on sunny days or day especially after rainfall. On a clear sunny day you can see Mt. Rainier in the distance, you can hear boats flying by with a water skier trailing behind, kayakers and canoers, and families enjoying the sunlight.

A Day at Volunteer Park

Today was free admission to various museums in the Seattle area and we decided to visit the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. Before we went into the museum we walked over to the Conservatory and walked around. It’s free to go into the Conservatory, but there is a box for donations. There are various rooms to view different types of plants.

Volunteer Park is also home to the “Black Sun” by Isamu Noguchi; views of the reservoir, Puget Sound, Olympic mountains and the Space Needle provide the backdrop.

The Seattle Asian Art Museum is located in an art deco building that originally held the Seattle Art Museum Collections.

There were many Chinese, Japanese, and Korean paintings on display, along with sculptures made of bronze, nephrite and jade. Different century styles were displayed showing the progress of techniques in plate making and painting. There was also modern art in the form of photography.

*Next door is the Lake View Cemetary, which is known for the burial site of Bruce Lee and his son Brandon. If you take a stroll around the cemetery you will find many prominent Seattle families.

A Look Back: Christmas in Seattle

The holiday season is one I look forward to every year, not because of the gifts I will get, but because of the holiday cheer, the decorations, the parties and wrapping the gifts for my friends and family.

For the past couple of years we’ve braved the cold to take in the decorations downtown. The Pacific Place shopping center is usually our first stop because of the convenient underground garage. They have a snow display in the evening.

One thing that we always do is ride the carousel at Westlake Park. The donations benefit a local charity and you get to ride around twice.

Pike Place Market is a short walk and we enjoy walking through the booths and people watching.

If we’re not too tired from walking around, we head to the top of Westlake Center and hop on the monorail to the Seattle Center. The center has a lot of activities planned through out the holiday season and has an indoor skate rink.

As always, the holiday season goes by with a blur.

Free Thursday is February 4th

Today is the end of January and tomorrow begins the first week of February, which means free admission to museums on Thursday, February 4th.

On January’s free Thursday we went to the Seattle Art Museum. I was particularly interested in seeing the Michelangelo Exhibit, which has since moved to another location. The Calder Exhibit is still there and is really interesting to see.

We parked underneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct by University St. We then walked up the Harbor Steps to get to the SAM. The steps are located at University Street between Western Ave and 1st Ave. Map.

This week, I think we will be going to the Seattle Asian Art Museum, which is located in Volunteer Park. We’ve been here two times, but never on a Free Thursday.

Waterfront View at Pier 66

One of the places I like to stop at along the waterfront is Pier 66. I didn’t know about this vantage point until my curiosity took over. Again, the day is grey.

To get to the observation deck you have to climb up these stairs.

At the top you’ll find this huge deck and fantastic views.

You can see all along the waterfront and look down at the Bell Harbor Marina.

There are free telescopes around the edges to look out.
